February at HYS

Help Henny’s Yarn Shop Support the very first Border to Bridge Run!

The fiber community at Henny’s Yarn Shop is a tight “knit” group. Many of our regular customers and friends have been touched by breast cancer and the shop is a place where we’ve shared many hugs and tears over the years. A dear friend of the shop, Jan Jones, is on her own cancer journey right now and Henny’s Yarn Shop will be sponsoring the Border To Bridge Run in Jan’s honor.

What is the Border to Bridge Run? Glad you asked! Keep reading to find out… And then join us in sponsoring or donating to this great cause.

Three women from the Caledonia community plan to run the length of Michigan’s lower peninsula in a first-ever Border-to-Bridge Run to raise funds supporting breast cancer research from June 4-11, 2022. Becky Bravata (Henny’s daughter), Lieschen Jacobs and Liz Burnis want to use their love of running to generate charitable donations for breast cancer research in partnership with the Van Andel Institute. The women will begin at the Michigan-Indiana border and plan to run more than 300 miles north over eight consecutive days to reach the Mackinac Bridge.

In addition to running, the women plan to make dedications to breast cancer survivors and warriors along their route. Local runners and walkers will be encouraged to join as they pass through towns. Business sponsorships will help fund Border-to-Bridge, and individuals will be able to donate online directly to the Van Andel Institute.

If you would like to be a part of the community at HYS that is sponsoring the Border to Bridge Run, please drop off your donation at the shop.

If you would like to donate directly to the Van Andel Institute, please visit the Border To Bridge page and use the DONATE button. Click HERE to be directed to that page.

To follow along as Becky, Liz, and Lieschen train, and to learn more about this event, LIKE and FOLLOW the Border to Bridge Run on Facebook. Share with family and friends who might like to honor a loved one with a donation. Click HERE for the Border to Bridge Run page.

For the LOVE of SHAWLS KAL ❤

It’s February, which brings to mind LOVE and valentines, so we are declaring our devotion to SHAWLS! All the SHAWLS! They are such a great knitting project because they are one size fits all and they make great gifts. Some shawls are simple and provide a relaxing retreat from our busy lives. Many shawl patterns can challenge us to learn new knitting techniques - experimenting with color combos and textures. In celebration of our love for shawls, this month’s KAL is any shawl pattern you choose! You’ll save 15% on supplies with our KAL discount. Scroll down for some suggestions that our shop team will be working on…

Shawl Inspiration #1 :: Rauli by Marie Amelie Designs

Henny will be working on this one and sending us updates from her beach knitting adventures in Costa Rica! Halfway between the shawl and the scarf, Rauli is a very soft oval-shaped accessory knitted in brioche to drape around the shoulders or wrap around the neck. It is a FREE pattern on Ravelry and shows off two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn. Find the pattern HERE.

Shawl Inspiration #2 :: Apsara by Pauline Popiolek

Here’s a beautiful shawl that is knit top down in one piece. The body is shaped using a short row technique and is worked in two sections of different colors. Both sections are divided by bands of eyelets and stripes. The use of different stitching for each section makes it interesting visually as well as fun to knit. Beautiful wavy lace border is knit at the end and the piece is finished off with crocheted tiny loops to keep the edge loose and easy to block. This sample from the shop uses Millefiori Light by Berroco for one color to give it an interesting look. Find the pattern HERE.

Shawl Inspiration #3 :: Inclinations by Andrea Mowry

According to the designer, “This shawl is all about texture, squish and the movement of color. You can absolutely play with different color options, and I share some ideas in the pattern, but don’t be afraid to make it your own! Knit it in 1 color or 6! Use up some stash, colorblock or stripe! It is knit flat, sideways, with increasing along one edge to create an asymmetrical triangle.”

We have a few yarn ideas at the shop that would work nicely with this one. Find the pattern HERE.

Shawl Inspiration #4 :: Miari by Marie Amelie Designs

Miari is a very soft brioche shawl. The central triangle-shaped section is worked in two-color brioche. A built in I-cord delineates this central section from a border worked with short-rows that accentuate the central panel’s triangle shape. Find the FREE pattern HERE.

Shawl Inspiration #6 :: Half + Half Triangles Wrap by Purl Soho

This shawl/wrap has been a huge hit in the fiber community! It plays with color and shape and offers the ultimate relaxing knit experience. A clever construction where short rows create two connected triangles, this knit transforms a simple garter stitch square into a double layered triangle. Fold the square along the color divide and choose which side will be front and center for the day! It is a FREE pattern and can be found HERE.

Shawl Inspiration #7 :: Hoarfrost by Andrea Mowry

One color, but lots of texture in this one! Made with worsted weight and knit on size US 8 needles, you’ll love this one if you need a break from fingering weight projects :) You can find the pattern HERE.

Shawl Inspiration #8 :: Lunae by Natasja Hornby

This one will let you play with the mosaic knitting technique which looks trickier than it actually is. Lunae has a relatively shallow, elongated triangular shape. (very wearable!) A prominent design feature are the vertical and horizontal mosaic bands that adorn the shawl. To achieve this look the upper body of the shawl is worked from side to side. And those tassels… YES YES YES! You can find the pattern HERE.
