November at HYS...

Who is up for a sock KAL? We figured that a lot of you would be busy working on projects for the holidays and that a quick sock project would be a good fit for November. A friend at the shop spotted this cool heel technique and many of us were intrigued by it. So, there you have it… the November KAL is the Vanilla is the New Black sock.

Featuring a Strong-style heel, this sock is worked from the top down without the need to pick up stitches. This means the finished sock is reversible. Yes, both sides are pretty enough to be shown!

We were honored to be part of a special knitting project for Harper’s Heart Closet. Harper was the great grand-daughter of one of our dear friends at the shop. During her months on earth, Harper faced many challenges making her quite medically complex. In honor of the brave soul she was, her parents started Harper’s Heart Closet, which donates packages to newly admitted babies in the cardiac ICU at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital. In October the packages included these adorable pumpkin hats. Thank you to the knitters from the shop that helped us participate in such a special project.

As this newsletter hits your inbox, Henny is across the globe in Africa. She’s there for three weeks spending time with the local women she’s befriended. She took a big load of yarn to share with them and the turnout was amazing! They gave away all the yarn and still had women lined up, so they handed out seed packages donated by the Caledonia Farmer’s Elevator. We love the connection the shop has with these women in Kenya. And… Henny will be bringing back 150 of the hand-woven baskets that are always a hit here at the shop! Stay tuned to our social media pages to find out when the baskets are available. They make great project bags as well as gifts for knitters and non-knitters alike!
